Did you know that as a freelancer you’re actually far more of a salesperson than you might have anticipated? You have to be good at selling yourself if you want to succeed as a freelancer.
A lot of what we do is selling our work and selling ourselves. Clients are essentially buying whatever your service or product is, whether you’re a graphic designer, web developer, writer or virtual assistant.
But your clients are really deciding to partner with you. So you are a salesperson and you are also your brand.
It is your job to be very comfortable with negotiations, making sales, making pitches, hearing the word no.
That is part of life as a freelancer, so if you’ve always gravitated towards doing well in sales and you want to do something a bit more creative, a lot of those sales skills translate really well over to the world of freelancing.
In my latest video, I’m sharing my own past sales experiences that prepared me for freelancing along with suggestions on how to strengthen your sales skills if you don’t have much experience. Dealing with objections, negotiating with people, knowing how to work with people who are a little bit difficult — these are all key skills to have as a freelancer. Any practice and experience you can get with sales skills will help you as a freelancer.
